Veteran BJP leader and former Maharashtra Minister Raj K. Purohit passed away on Saturday at a private hospital in Mumbai following a prolonged illness. He was 71. Known for his decades-long political career, Purohit was widely respected for his organisational skills, legislative contributions, and efforts to strengthen the BJP in Maharashtra.
Purohit’s last rites are scheduled at Muktidham, Chandanwadi, after his mortal remains are placed at Rajhans Building on Marine Drive for public homage. Party workers, well-wishers, and citizens are expected to pay their respects, reflecting the leader’s deep connection with the public and party cadre.
During his career, Purohit was elected four times from the Mumbadevi Assembly constituency and once from Colaba, serving more than 25 years in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly. He held key organisational positions, including Mumbai BJP President, and played a pivotal role in expanding the party’s influence across the state.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed profound grief over his demise, describing Purohit as a “hearty personality” and a close friend. In a statement on X, Fadnavis praised Purohit’s firmness, enthusiasm, and positivity, noting his significant contributions to party growth and legislative work.
Fadnavis further highlighted Purohit’s rapport with the business community and his dedication to resolving long-standing civic and municipal issues. The Chief Minister also acknowledged Purohit’s active participation in recent municipal election campaigns, underlining his unwavering commitment to public service.
Raj K. Purohit’s passing marks the end of an era in Mumbai and Maharashtra politics, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership, organisational acumen, and devotion to the BJP’s growth in the state. Condolences poured in from political leaders and citizens alike, mourning the loss of a veteran statesman.
