Vaishnaw Says Railways Saved Rs 6,000 Crore Via Electrification

Railways saves Rs 6,000 crore through electrification, says Vaishnaw.

The Indian Railways has saved nearly ₹6,000 crore through its push toward electrification, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said, highlighting the financial and environmental benefits of reducing dependence on diesel.

Speaking about the transformation of the railway network, Vaishnaw noted that the shift to electric traction has significantly lowered fuel costs while improving operational efficiency. The move forms part of a broader strategy to modernise the railways and align it with sustainable energy goals, as the transporter continues to expand electrified routes across the country.

According to the minister, electrification has not only reduced expenditure on imported fossil fuels but also enhanced the speed and reliability of train services. Electric locomotives, he said, offer better acceleration and require less maintenance compared to their diesel counterparts, contributing to long-term cost savings for the national transporter.

The government has been aggressively pursuing railway electrification in recent years, with a large portion of the broad-gauge network already converted. Officials have set ambitious targets to achieve near-complete electrification, positioning Indian Railways among the largest fully electrified rail networks in the world.

Beyond cost savings, the transition is also expected to play a key role in reducing carbon emissions. By shifting to electricity — increasingly sourced from renewable energy — the railways aim to lower its environmental footprint and contribute to India’s climate commitments.

Vaishnaw also emphasised that the electrification drive is part of a wider reform agenda that includes infrastructure upgrades, improved passenger amenities, and the adoption of modern technologies. These efforts are intended to make rail travel more efficient, sustainable, and competitive with other modes of transport.

The reported savings underscore the economic impact of the transition, even as the railways continues to invest heavily in expanding and upgrading its network. Officials say the long-term benefits of electrification are likely to grow further as more routes are converted and energy efficiency improves.
