Vadodara Inspector Weaponised Love Jihad Law to Extort Bribe — ACB Steps in and Makes Arrest

The Vadodara inspector threatened a fake love jihad case to extort Rs 2 lakh from the live-in couple.

A police inspector in Vadodara rural has been booked and his aide arrested by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹2 lakh from a man by threatening to implicate him in a false “love jihad” case under the Gujarat Freedom of Religion Act. The case has raised serious concerns over alleged misuse of legal provisions and abuse of police authority.

The accused inspector has been identified as V. A. Charan, posted at Padra police station in Vadodara Rural, while his aide has been identified as Sajid Ali Gulamrasul Syed, who was caught red-handed by ACB officials while allegedly accepting the bribe amount. The arrest followed a complaint that triggered a trap operation by the anti-corruption agency.

According to officials, the case originated from a domestic dispute between a man and his live-in partner at their residence in rural Vadodara. The woman reportedly contacted the emergency 112 helpline during the altercation, after which both individuals in their 30s were taken to the Padra police station for inquiry and preventive action.

Based on the woman’s complaint, police initially placed the man under preventive detention for 24 hours. It is alleged that during this period, the inspector and his aide used the situation to pressure the man, threatening to register a more serious case under provisions related to “love jihad” unless he paid money.

Investigators from the ACB stated that the duo demanded ₹2 lakh to avoid initiating legal proceedings against the man. Acting on the complaint, the bureau laid a trap and arrested the aide while allegedly receiving the bribe amount. The inspector has also been booked in connection with the case, and further investigation is underway to determine the extent of his involvement.

The incident has once again brought attention to allegations of corruption within law enforcement agencies and the alleged misuse of sensitive legal provisions in interpersonal disputes. Officials said the investigation will focus on whether similar instances have occurred in the past involving the accused.
