V-P Radhakrishnan Highlights Assam-Tamil Literary Exchanges At Gauhati University

Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan on Monday described literary exchanges between Assam and Tamil Nadu as an expression of India's cultural unity and called for greater academic and linguistic interaction between the two states. Addressing a programme at Gauhati University, he highlighted the role of language and literature in preserving the memory, wisdom and identity of civilisations.

Radhakrishnan appreciated efforts to translate Assamese literary works into Tamil and Tamil literature into Assamese, describing such exchanges as an important way to strengthen connections across India's diverse linguistic traditions. He encouraged universities, scholars and students to expand academic and literary engagement between Assam and Tamil Nadu, emphasising that the country's linguistic diversity draws strength from its shared cultural foundations.

During the programme, the Vice-President released "Bhupen Hazarika: Hundred Years of a Wandering Songs", edited by Ankuran Dutta and Nani Gopal Mahanta, along with the fifth revised and enlarged edition of "Chandrakanta Abhidhan". He also highlighted Gauhati University's contribution to preserving India's linguistic heritage, including research on endangered languages, multilingualism, women's studies, environmental sustainability and Indian knowledge systems.

Radhakrishnan urged students and young people to use education, research and innovation to address challenges in their communities and contribute to the country's development. Linking the message to the goal of 'Viksit Bharat @2047', he emphasised that technology should serve humanity and innovation should support inclusive development. He also invoked Swami Vivekananda's call to young people to remain determined in pursuing their goals.

The Vice-President also urged students to stay away from drugs, maintain discipline, manage their time effectively and avoid excessive use of social media. He led students and other participants in taking the "No to Drugs" pledge during the programme, placing the focus on responsible choices and constructive engagement among young people.

Radhakrishnan also highlighted Assam's progress in education, infrastructure, connectivity, investment and employment under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. He noted that more than 1.64 lakh merit-based government appointments had been made in the state since 2021 and highlighted the commencement of the first MBA batch at IIM Guwahati.

Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Education Minister Ranoj Pegu, Chief Secretary Ravi Kota, Gauhati University Vice-Chancellor Nani Gopal Mahanta, faculty members and students attended the programme.
