Uttarakhand Government Provides Free Pre-Recruitment Training for Agniveer Aspirants

The Uttarakhand government announced free pre-recruitment training for young men and women aspiring to join the Indian Army as Agniveers, rolling out the initiative across all 13 districts on Thursday. Directed by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, the programme—formalised through a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) by the Sports and Youth Welfare Department—aims to channel the state's rich martial heritage into modern military service. This move builds on Uttarakhand's legacy as a powerhouse of armed forces recruitment, where over 5% of its population serves in uniform, producing more soldiers per capita than any other state.

Eligibility criteria are straightforward: candidates must be native or permanent residents of Uttarakhand or studying/serving in state institutions, aged over 16, and have passed high school with at least 45% aggregate marks and 33% in each subject. Training will cover physical fitness, written exams, and practical drills tailored to the Agnipath scheme's rigorous standards, which recruits youth for four-year tenures with potential permanent absorption. Dhami emphasised the programme's role in empowering youth: "In view of Uttarakhand's glorious military tradition, we are equipping our young talent to serve the nation as Agniveers." The state already boasts specialised recruitment rallies, with districts like Pauri Garhwal and Almora historically topping enlistments.

Complementing the training, the government has pledged reservations in state jobs for Agniveers post-service, addressing criticisms of the scheme's short-term nature. Launched in 2022, Agnipath seeks to infuse younger, tech-savvy blood into the forces while cutting pension costs, though it sparked protests over job security. Uttarakhand's proactive support—mirroring initiatives in Haryana and Uttar Pradesh—could see thousands apply, given the scheme's annual intake of 46,000 personnel. The free programme eliminates financial barriers for rural youth from the Kumaon and Garhwal hills, where military service is both a tradition and an economic lifeline.
