Uttarakhand Prepares To Welcome Its First Rare White Tigers In Dehradun

Uttarakhand is set to receive its first-ever white tigers after the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) approved the transfer of two male white tigers to Dehradun Zoo, marking a significant milestone for the state's wildlife sector. The rare big cats will be sourced from Gwalior Zoo in Madhya Pradesh and Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha, and will be publicly displayed in Uttarakhand for the first time once the transfers are complete.

According to officials, preparations are already underway to bring a nearly two-year-old white male tiger from Gwalior Zoo, with its arrival expected to coincide with the observance of Wildlife Week. As part of the exchange arrangement, Dehradun Zoo will send a normal-coloured tiger to Gwalior Zoo in return. Forest Range Officer and Dehradun Zoo in-charge Diksha Bhatt described the clearance as a major achievement for the Uttarakhand Forest Department, noting that the department had been pursuing the proposal for several years before finally receiving approval.

The CZA has also cleared the transfer of a second male white tiger from Nandankanan Zoological Park in Odisha, although officials have yet to finalize the logistical details and exchange terms for that particular transfer. Earlier discussions between the two states had reportedly involved Dehradun Zoo sending a pair of Himalayan Gorals, along with a pair of Red Pandas from Nainital, as part of a potential exchange arrangement with Odisha's zoo authorities.

Forest Minister Subodh Uniyal welcomed the development, saying it was heartening news for Uttarakhand and expressing confidence that the white tigers would become a major attraction for wildlife enthusiasts and tourists visiting the state. The approvals bring to an end years of sustained effort by the Uttarakhand Forest Department, following earlier proposals for similar transfers that had previously been rejected by the Central Zoo Authority.

Uttarakhand currently has no white tigers housed in any of its zoos, making the upcoming arrivals a notable addition to the state's existing wildlife attractions. The state is already home to a substantial tiger population, ranking third in the country according to the 2022 All India Tiger Estimation, with 560 tigers recorded, trailing only Madhya Pradesh's 785 and Karnataka's 563. Within Uttarakhand, Corbett Tiger Reserve alone accounts for 260 tigers, the highest concentration found in any single tiger reserve across India, underscoring the state's broader significance in the country's tiger conservation efforts.

White tigers are a rare colour variant of the Bengal tiger, resulting from a recessive genetic trait rather than representing a distinct subspecies. Officials have said the animals are being brought to Dehradun Zoo primarily for purposes of conservation education and public display, offering visitors an opportunity to learn about the genetics and conservation considerations associated with this rare colour variation. Ahead of the first tiger's arrival, officials are working to complete necessary quarantine protocols, transport logistics and enclosure preparations, with the goal of introducing the animal to visitors in time for Wildlife Week.
