Uttarakhand Police Reunite Missing UP Man With Family After Decade Apart

A single word written in a diary helped police identify an elderly man who had been missing from his home in Uttar Pradesh for nearly 10 years. Shyam Singh, originally from Farrukhabad district, was reunited with his family after officers traced the word “Rajepur” and shared his photograph with police in the area.

Singh had reportedly left his home about a decade ago while experiencing mental health difficulties. Despite sustained efforts, his family was unable to locate him. During the intervening years, he wandered through the Tadikhet and Majkhali areas of Almora, where local residents recognised him by appearance but did not know his name, background or place of origin.

Vinod Fartyal, the officer in charge of the Majkhali police outpost, had noticed Singh wandering in poor physical condition for several years. Police officers repeatedly attempted to ask him where he came from and how long he had been living in Almora. However, his impaired mental and physical health reportedly prevented him from communicating the information they needed to establish his identity.

Hoping that he might be able to express himself in writing, police handed Singh a pen and a diary. He initially remained silent but later wrote the word “Rajepur.” Treating it as a possible clue, Almora Police contacted their counterparts at Rajepur police station in Farrukhabad, Uttar Pradesh, and forwarded Singh’s photograph for identification.

The inquiry established that Singh was a resident of Rajepur Rathoudi village in Farrukhabad district. Police then traced his relatives and contacted them the same day, bringing an unexpected end to their decade-long search. After receiving confirmation that Singh was alive, members of his family immediately travelled from Uttar Pradesh to the Majkhali police outpost in Almora.

The reunion left Singh’s family members deeply emotional as they saw him safe after nearly 10 years of uncertainty. They thanked the Almora and Uttarakhand Police for handling the case with patience and compassion. What began as a routine effort to identify a vulnerable man ultimately succeeded through a simple written clue that reconnected him with the family he had lost contact with years earlier.
