USS Abraham Lincoln in Thailand: 5,000 Sailors Arrive After 286 Days at Sea

The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier arrived at Laem Chabang port in Thailand’s Chonburi province after an extended deployment in the Middle East. The nuclear-powered carrier, carrying around 5,000 service members, entered the port on Wednesday, marking its first full port stop after spending 286 days at sea since the beginning of its deployment in 2025. The arrival follows a lengthy operational period during which the carrier supported US military operations in the Middle East.

Associated Press journalists observed the Lincoln being guided into Laem Chabang by tugboats, shortly after the destroyer USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. passed through the area. The US Embassy in Bangkok confirmed that the Lincoln’s carrier strike group had arrived at Laem Chabang. The USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. docked at the nearby port of Sriracha, while the guided-missile cruiser USS Robert Smalls was stationed at Map Ta Phut in neighbouring Rayong province.

The Lincoln’s deployment included more than 250 consecutive days at sea, described as a record-setting period without an uninterrupted port visit. The prolonged deployment has generated concerns over the physical and mental well-being of personnel aboard the carrier. Reports have pointed to deteriorating mental health among some crew members as well as shortages of supplies, including food and hygiene products, during the lengthy period away from regular port facilities.

The carrier had been involved in supporting US military operations connected to the conflict with Iran before being relieved in the Middle East. The usually Asia-based USS George Washington took over the Lincoln’s role in the region in August. The change allowed the Lincoln and its personnel to begin a period of rest and recovery after months of sustained operations and extended time at sea.

Captain Dan Keeler, the Lincoln’s commanding officer, described the arrival in Thailand as a demonstration of the United States’ continuing commitment to its allies and partners in the country. Thai officials have said the port call is intended to provide service members with an opportunity to rest and recover before the carrier eventually returns to its US base. Many of the sailors are expected to visit Pattaya, a popular beach destination located near Laem Chabang.

The visit is also expected to have an economic impact on the surrounding area, with Pattaya officials welcoming the arrival of thousands of US service members. Local authorities said they were increasing security measures to ensure the visit proceeds smoothly. The port call gives the crew a much-needed break following one of the US Navy carrier fleet’s longest recent deployments, while also highlighting the continuing defence relationship between the United States and Thailand.
