Marco Rubio arrives in Delhi to meet PM Modi.

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio arrived in New Delhi on Saturday as Washington and New Delhi look to strengthen bilateral ties that have reportedly faced strain over the past year, with high-level diplomatic engagements planned during his visit.

Rubio’s trip includes scheduled meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, alongside participation in a Quad foreign ministers’ conclave being hosted in the Indian capital. The visit is being viewed as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts to reinforce strategic cooperation between the two countries across defence, trade, and regional security frameworks.

Earlier in the day, Rubio arrived in Kolkata, where he made a stop at the Missionaries of Charity, a prominent humanitarian organisation founded by Mother Teresa. The visit formed part of his brief engagement in the city before travelling onward to New Delhi for the core diplomatic meetings.

In the capital, Rubio is expected to hold detailed discussions with India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, covering a broad set of bilateral and global issues, including Indo-Pacific stability, economic cooperation, and coordination within the Quad grouping comprising India, the United States, Japan, and Australia.

A key highlight of the visit will be Rubio’s meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where both sides are expected to review the current state of India–US relations and explore pathways to deepen strategic alignment amid evolving geopolitical challenges.

The visit comes at a sensitive diplomatic moment, with both governments seeking to manage differences that emerged over the past year while maintaining momentum in one of the most significant partnerships in global politics. Officials on both sides are expected to focus on resetting engagement and reinforcing cooperation across defence technology, trade flows, and Indo-Pacific strategy during the high-level talks.
