US Ambassador Sergio Gor Hints At Major India US Nuclear Energy Breakthrough

India US nuclear ties gain momentum amid new deals.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor has indicated that a significant expansion in civil nuclear cooperation may be on the horizon between India and the United States, following renewed diplomatic and commercial engagement between the two countries in the energy sector. His remarks came in response to a social media post by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis regarding a high-level meeting with an American nuclear industry delegation.

The US delegation, which included representatives from the Nuclear Energy Institute and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum, has been in India for discussions with government officials and industry stakeholders. According to participants, the meetings focused on expanding collaboration in nuclear technology, supply chains, and potential joint ventures between Indian and American companies.

In his response, Gor wrote that “big things ahead in India-US collaboration on nuclear energy,” reflecting optimism over the growing momentum in bilateral cooperation. The engagement comes at a time when India is seeking to significantly scale up its nuclear power capacity as part of its long-term energy security and decarbonization strategy.

Parallel to the diplomatic outreach, the Maharashtra government has signed multiple memorandums of understanding with private sector groups to develop nuclear power projects with a combined capacity of 25,400 megawatts. Officials estimate the proposed investments at around ₹6.5 lakh crore, with the aim of tripling India’s current nuclear generation capacity and supporting national net-zero commitments.

Industry representatives said that recent legislative and policy changes, including the enactment of the SHANTI Act, 2025, have created new opportunities for foreign collaboration in India’s nuclear sector. The legislation is viewed by US stakeholders as a potential framework for easing commercial partnerships and expanding access to advanced reactor technologies.

Experts and industry leaders from the US delegation noted that cooperation could span a wide range of technologies, from large-scale reactors to emerging designs such as small modular reactors. They described the current phase of engagement as a renewed effort to build long-term partnerships, suggesting that India-US nuclear ties may be entering a new phase of strategic and commercial alignment.
