US Ambassador Sergio Gor Arrives in India, Pledges to Deepen Strategic Partnership
US Ambassador Sergio Gor returns to India, highlighting fresh opportunities to strengthen strategic ties between both nations.
US Ambassador to India Sergio Gore arrived in New Delhi on Friday, January 10, 2026, expressing optimism about the future of bilateral ties. In a post on X, Gor wrote, "Great to be back in India! Incredible opportunities ahead for our two nations! "His return marks the beginning of his official tenure after being sworn in at the White House in November 2025. The ambassador's arrival comes at a time of growing strategic convergence between the United States and India on issues ranging from defense cooperation and technology to Indo-Pacific security.
Prior to his formal appointment, Gor visited India in October 2025, where he held meetings with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. These early interactions helped lay the groundwork for his role. Following his swearing-in ceremony, US President Donald Trump described Gor as the right person to further strengthen the strategic, economic, and security partnership with New Delhi. Trump highlighted the "fantastic relationship" with Prime Minister Modi and noted that the Indian leadership had already expressed positive views about Gore.
During his Senate confirmation process in September 2025, Gor had described India as "one of the most important relationships our nation has in the world." In August 2025, President Trump nominated him as Ambassador to India and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs. Gor's appointment reflects the administration's continued emphasis on deepening ties with India, the world's largest democracy and a key partner in countering regional challenges.
