UP Plans ₹300 Crore Spiritual Makeover For Sambhal, Believed to be Birthplace of Kalki Avatar
UP plans a ₹300 crore redevelopment of Sambhal as the Kalki avatar's sacred pilgrimage destination.
The Uttar Pradesh Government is planning an ambitious new spiritual tourism project to transform Sambhal into a major pilgrimage destination, positioning it alongside established hubs like Ayodhya and Varanasi. The initiative is based on the Hindu belief that Sambhal is the future birthplace of Kalki, the prophesied last incarnation of Vishnu.
Officials say the project aims not only to promote religious tourism but also to boost local economic activity and attract visitors throughout the year. As part of the plan, authorities intend to restore 68 pilgrimage sites and 19 ancient wells, preserving their historical and spiritual significance.
A major component is the redevelopment of the Vanshgopal 24 Kosi Parikrama pilgrimage route, a 52-kilometre circuit. The project, with an approved budget of ₹300 crore, will include improved road infrastructure and a dedicated walking path for pilgrims.

Sources indicate that the broader vision is to integrate Sambhal into an expanded tourism circuit connecting it with key destinations such as Mathura and Vrindavan. This approach is expected to increase visitor numbers, improve connectivity, and strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s position as a leading spiritual tourism destination.
If implemented successfully, the project could significantly reshape the state’s tourism landscape by adding a new dimension beyond Ayodhya and Varanasi, while also promoting lesser-known heritage sites.
