UP Goes from Bimaru to Dynamo! Yogi Adityanath on State's Progress over 8 Years

Uttar Pradesh: From ‘BIMARU’ to Economic Powerhouse in Eight Years, Says CM Yogi

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath declared on Monday that Uttar Pradesh has transformed from a struggling ‘BIMARU’ state into India’s economic dynamo over the past eight years under the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Addressing a press conference in Lucknow to mark the eighth anniversary of his administration, Adityanath attributed this turnaround to “Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies of service, security, and good governance.”

Reflecting on the state’s past, Adityanath noted that prior to 2017, Uttar Pradesh languished among India’s lagging regions, plagued by neglect and underdevelopment. “Eight years ago, UP faced an identity crisis, with agriculture in decline and farmers in distress,” he said.

Today, he asserted, the state leads across multiple sectors, emerging as a cornerstone of national progress.

Highlighting agricultural reforms under the “double-engine government”—a term denoting the synergy between the BJP-led state and central administrations—Adityanath said the sector has seen a remarkable revival. “The agricultural growth rate, which hovered around 5% in 2016-17, has soared to over 13.5%,” he claimed.

He credited his government’s first cabinet decision in 2017—waiving farmers’ loans worth Rs 36,000 crore—for sparking this resurgence. Consequently, food grain production has jumped nearly 20%, from 557 lakh metric tonnes in 2016-17 to over 668 lakh metric tonnes last year.

Adityanath’s remarks underscore Uttar Pradesh’s evolving narrative, positioning it as a vital engine of India’s economic ascent under his stewardship.
