At least six workers were killed and three others remain trapped after an under-construction bridge collapsed during a late-night storm in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur district on Thursday. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. while construction work was underway on the bridge spanning the Betwa River, connecting Morakandar Parsani in Kurara to Naithi village.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Hamirpur, Arvind Kumar Verma, confirmed that authorities reached the spot immediately after receiving information about the slab collapse. “SDRF is here, and rescue operations are underway. We have retrieved and identified five deceased,” Verma told reporters, with the death toll later rising to six as more bodies were recovered from the debris .
The bridge, which is being built over the Betwa River, suffered a partial collapse when a slab gave way during the storm. Workers were reportedly on-site conducting construction activities when the accident happened, leaving some trapped beneath the fallen concrete and steel debris. Rescue teams have been working continuously to locate and extract the three missing workers presumed trapped under the rubble.

The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been deployed to the site, alongside local police and emergency services, to conduct search and rescue operations. Authorities have secured the area to prevent further accidents and to allow unhindered rescue efforts .
Officials are investigating the cause of the collapse, with preliminary reports suggesting the storm may have played a role in the structural failure. Questions are being raised about construction quality, safety protocols, and whether work should have continued during severe weather conditions. A formal probe will likely examine whether regulatory guidelines were followed during the bridge's construction.
