Ujjaini Express Coaches Derail Near Rishikesh Yard During Shunting Operation, No Casualties Reported

Three coaches of the Ujjaini Express derailed near Rishikesh in Uttarakhand on Monday night, officials said, though no casualties were reported as the train was empty at the time of the incident. The derailment occurred around 9:40 pm near the Yog Nagari Rishikesh railway station while the train was being moved to the railway yard.

According to railway officials, the incident took place when the train was passing through the yard area near Khand Gaon. The service operates between Lakshmibai Nagar in Indore and Yog Nagari Rishikesh, and was undergoing routine movement within the station premises when the accident occurred.

Preliminary information suggests that the locomotive collided with a buffer stop at the end of the shunting line, resulting in sudden pressure on the coaches. The impact caused one coach to derail completely, while another sustained structural damage after buckling in the middle.

Officials confirmed that three coaches were damaged in the incident, though no passengers were present onboard at the time. The train was reportedly being positioned for yard operations, which are typically carried out without passengers.

Railway authorities have launched an inquiry to determine the exact cause of the derailment and assess whether technical fault, operational error, or signalling issues contributed to the incident. Restoration work is expected to begin after a detailed inspection of the affected coaches and tracks.

The incident has prompted renewed attention on safety protocols during shunting operations in railway yards, though officials have reiterated that there was no threat to passenger safety given the empty status of the train at the time of the accident.
