Two Mumbai Teens Drown While Swimming in Cattle Shed Tank

Two teenagers die after drowning in Aarey Colony water tank.

Two teenagers aged 13 and 15 drowned while swimming in a water tank at a cattle shed in suburban Goregaon East, Mumbai, on Friday, August 21. The incident took place around noon in Gautam Nagar, within the Aarey Colony area, according to civic officials. The boys were identified as 15-year-old Zaib Patel and 13-year-old Nakhib Patel. The incident has left their families and school community shocked as emergency personnel were called to the location after the boys were found in the water tank.

According to officials, the two boys had gone into the water tank at the cattle shed for swimming when they drowned. The exact circumstances under which they entered the tank and how they became unable to get out were not immediately clear. The incident was reported at around 12 noon, following which fire brigade personnel reached the spot and began rescue efforts. The authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the safety conditions at the cattle shed.

The deceased teenagers were students at Jogeshwari Gunfa English Medium Secondary School. Zaib Patel was studying in Class 10, while Nakhib Patel was a Class 9 student. The school principal confirmed that both boys were absent from classes on Friday, when the incident occurred. Their deaths have caused grief among their classmates, teachers and others associated with the school, with the loss of two students at such a young age deeply affecting the school community.

Fire brigade personnel rescued the boys from the water tank and immediately took them to Trauma Care Hospital for medical treatment. Despite the emergency response and efforts to save them, doctors declared both teenagers brought dead after they arrived at the hospital, civic officials said. The authorities have not provided further details about whether the boys were accompanied by other people at the time of the incident or how long they remained inside the water tank before being rescued.

The incident has once again highlighted the risks associated with children and teenagers entering deep water bodies without proper supervision or safety arrangements. Water tanks located at cattle sheds and other facilities may not be designed for recreational swimming and can pose serious risks because of their depth, slippery surfaces and difficulty of access during an emergency. In such situations, even strong swimmers can face difficulties if they suddenly become exhausted or encounter trouble in the water.

Officials are likely to look into the circumstances surrounding the deaths and determine whether adequate precautions were in place at the site. The incident also underlines the importance of restricting access to potentially dangerous water tanks and ensuring that children are kept away from such areas. For the families of Zaib and Nakhib, however, the incident has resulted in an irreparable loss, while their school community is mourning the deaths of two young students who were expected to return to their classrooms after the weekend.
