Two More Arrested in Turkman Gate Violence During Court-Ordered Demolition; Probe Continues

Delhi Police nab two additional suspects in mosque-area stone-pelting incident.

Delhi Police arrested two more individuals, Mohammed Imran and Adnan, on Tuesday in connection with the violent stone-pelting incident at Turkman Gate. The clash occurred when approximately 25-30 people hurled stones at police and Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials during a court-ordered demolition of illegal encroachments near Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque. With these latest arrests, the total number of people detained in the case has reached 20.

The incident took place on January 7, when MCD teams arrived with JCB machines early in the morning to execute the Delhi High Court's directive for clearing encroachments around the mosque near Ramlila Maidan. The stone-pelting resulted in minor injuries to five police personnel, who received immediate medical treatment at a nearby hospital. Authorities described the attackers as a small group of miscreants attempting to disrupt the operation.

Prior to the demolition drive, Delhi Police held multiple coordination meetings with members of the Aman Committee and other local stakeholders to ensure peace and prevent escalation. Senior officials stated that all feasible preventive steps and confidence-building measures were implemented. Despite these efforts, the violent reaction occurred, prompting police to respond with measured and minimal use of force to restore order swiftly.

The Tis Hazari Court has reserved its decision on bail applications filed by five of the accused—Adnan, Kaif, Kasif, Areeb, and Sameer. Judicial Magistrate First Class Sayesha Chaddha deferred the ruling to Wednesday at 4 PM. The court proceedings follow the initial arrests made in the aftermath of the confrontation.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central District) Nidhin Valsan confirmed the minor nature of the injuries sustained by officers, while Joint Commissioner of Police (Central Range) Madhur Verma reiterated that the situation was brought under control promptly. Police continue their investigation to identify any remaining individuals involved in the stone-pelting and to ensure accountability for obstructing the lawful demolition process.
