Two Killed, Eight Injured as Roof Collapses During Muharram Procession in Lucknow

Two 12-year-old boys were killed and eight other people injured after a portion of a house roof collapsed during a Muharram procession in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday night, police said. The incident occurred in Mohalla Pakhariya in Mohana village under the Itaunja police station limits at around 10:15 pm, when people had gathered on the roof of a house to serve drinks to participants in the religious procession. The roof suddenly gave way, trapping several people beneath the debris.
Police and emergency responders rushed to the scene immediately after receiving information about the collapse. Rescue teams removed those trapped under the debris and shifted all the injured to the 100-bed Joint Hospital in Bakshi Ka Talab (BKT) for treatment. Senior police officers also reached the site to supervise the rescue operation and ensure that relief efforts were carried out without delay.
Doctors later declared two 12-year-old boys, identified as Ali, son of Kasim, and Armaan, son of Imran, both residents of Mohana, dead during treatment. The deaths have cast a shadow over the Muharram observances in the area, with local residents expressing grief over the tragic loss of the two children.

According to hospital authorities, five of the injured sustained serious injuries and were referred to the trauma centre at King George's Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow for specialised treatment. Two injured boys were discharged after receiving first aid, while another injured person, identified as Rusida, daughter of Liaqat Ali, continues to receive treatment at the BKT Hospital. The condition of the patients shifted to KGMU has not been officially updated.
Preliminary information suggests that the roof collapsed while several people were standing on it during the distribution of refreshments to participants in the Muharram procession. Authorities are expected to investigate the structural condition of the building and determine the exact cause of the collapse. Officials have not yet indicated whether overcrowding or structural weakness contributed to the incident.
Police have initiated the necessary legal proceedings and said further investigation is underway. Officials are also gathering statements from witnesses and local residents to reconstruct the sequence of events leading up to the accident. Authorities have assured that all aspects of the incident will be examined and appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.
