Two Killed as Car Drives Into Crowd in Germany’s Leipzig Shopping Area

Car rams into crowd in Leipzig, Germany, killing two and injuring three in suspected attack.

Two people were killed and several others injured after a driver ploughed into pedestrians in a busy shopping area in central Leipzig on Monday afternoon, in what authorities suspect was a deliberate act of violence. Officials said the incident caused widespread panic in one of the city’s most crowded commercial districts.

Leipzig Mayor Burkhard Jung described the incident as a “terrible tragedy,” confirming that three people sustained serious injuries, while several others suffered minor injuries. Emergency services were quickly deployed to the scene following the attack, which took place in a densely populated pedestrian zone frequented by shoppers and tourists.

Police said the driver, a 33-year-old German citizen from the Leipzig area, was arrested at the scene inside the vehicle without resistance. Authorities identified him as a German-born resident and confirmed that he is currently under investigation on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. While the motive remains unclear, investigators have not ruled out deliberate intent.

According to Saxony state officials, including Interior Minister Armin Schuster, early assessments suggest the suspect may have acted alone. He noted that in similar incidents, factors such as psychological instability have sometimes played a role, though he stressed that no conclusions would be drawn until investigations are completed. Police Chief René Demmler said the vehicle moved from Augustusplatz into the pedestrian shopping area on Grimmaische Strasse before striking multiple people.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect is being held in custody and that he did not attempt to resist arrest. Investigators from the public prosecutor’s office have opened formal proceedings, and the case is being treated as a serious criminal investigation involving both murder and attempted murder charges. Officials also stated that there is currently no ongoing threat to the public.

Saxony state Governor Michael Kretschmer expressed condolences to the victims’ families and said the state would pursue a swift and thorough investigation. Leipzig, a major city in eastern Germany with a population of more than 630,000, has seen heightened police presence following the incident as authorities continue to examine evidence and establish a clear sequence of events.
