Mizoram Police Seize ₹30.72 Crore Meth Haul, Bust Cross-Border Drug Ring

In a landmark operation, Mizoram Police seized methamphetamine tablets worth ₹30.72 crore in Champhai district near the Myanmar border, marking one of the state’s largest single drug hauls.

Two suspects were arrested in the intelligence-driven raid, dealing a major blow to cross-border narcotics trafficking.

Late Sunday night, acting on precise intelligence, police intercepted a vehicle traveling from Thinghrangkawn to Bungzung, both border villages in Champhai. A thorough search uncovered 236.33 kg of highly addictive methamphetamine tablets—over two crore pills—concealed inside.

The drugs, valued at ₹30.72 crore, were allegedly smuggled from Myanmar for distribution in Indian metropolitan cities and international markets, where demand for methamphetamine, also known as Yaba or party tablets, is surging.

The arrested individuals, Laltanpuia (30) and Vanropuia (27), both Champhai residents, face charges under the Narcotic Drugs & Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The vehicle was impounded, along with ₹2,89,500 in cash found with the suspects.

In a separate incident, security forces in Manipur’s Churachandpur district seized 1.3 kg of heroin hidden in 108 soap cases. Assam Rifles and Manipur Police arrested 29-year-old Letminthang from Chandel district, suspecting the drugs were en route from Myanmar to Assam’s Silchar.

Champhai and Churachandpur, both sharing porous borders with Myanmar, remain hotspots for drug smuggling. These operations highlight the relentless efforts of law enforcement to curb the growing drug menace in Northeast India.
