Two Children Killed, Woman Injured In Suspected Militant Bomb Attack In Manipur
Bomb attack in Manipur’s Bishnupur kills two children, injures mother, triggering fresh tensions.
At least two children were killed and a woman injured in a bomb attack in Manipur’s Bishnupur district early Tuesday, in what authorities suspect to be an act carried out by Kuki militants. The incident occurred in Moirang Tronglaobi village at around 1 a.m., according to police officials.
A senior police officer in Imphal said a powerful explosive device was fired at a residential house, where the victims were asleep. The blast killed a five-year-old boy and a five-month-old girl on the spot, while their mother sustained injuries. The explosion also caused significant structural damage to the house, intensifying fear among residents in the area.
Moirang Tronglaobi village lies close to the hill district of Churachandpur district, which is predominantly inhabited by Kuki-Zo communities. The region has remained sensitive due to its proximity to hill positions allegedly occupied by armed groups. During the ethnic violence that gripped Manipur in 2023 and 2024, the area witnessed repeated incidents of gunfire and sporadic attacks.

Local residents reported that explosives have previously been launched from surrounding hill slopes into the village, suggesting firing positions located several kilometres away. The latest attack has reignited concerns over the vulnerability of settlements in the valley districts, where tensions between communities have persisted despite heightened security presence.
In the aftermath of the blast, protests erupted in the region. Angry residents blocked key roads and set three goods-laden trucks on fire along routes leading toward Churachandpur, further escalating the already fragile situation. Authorities described the law-and-order scenario in Bishnupur and nearby areas as highly tense.
Security forces, led by senior police officials, have been deployed in large numbers, and combing operations are underway to track down those responsible. Meanwhile, BJP MLA Shanti Singh condemned the attack, calling it a “heinous act of terrorism” and urging strict action against those involved. Officials have appealed for calm as investigations continue.
