Trump Plans White House Dinner With Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Amid AI Tensions
Trump and Amodei meet amid disputes over AI development and safeguards.
US President Donald Trump is set to meet Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei for a private dinner at the White House on Sunday evening, according to a technology industry source cited by AFP. The meeting comes after months of disagreement between the Trump administration and the artificial intelligence company over the use and regulation of AI systems. It is expected to be the first reported one-on-one meeting between Trump and Amodei.
The dinner invitation comes shortly after a federal appeals court upheld the Pentagon’s decision to designate Anthropic as a “supply chain risk”. The designation prevents the US military from using the company’s AI models. The development followed a dispute over the conditions under which Anthropic would allow its technology to be used by the US government and military.
The disagreement intensified in February after Anthropic declined to permit its tools to be used for fully autonomous weapons and domestic mass surveillance. The Trump administration subsequently sanctioned the company. Trump also criticised Amodei publicly after the Anthropic chief called for a pause in AI development, referring to him as a “perfect little angel” in remarks about his position.

Amodei was also absent from Thursday’s White House state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping, which brought together several prominent figures from the technology industry. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, who leads one of Anthropic’s major competitors, was among the technology executives attending the event. Amodei’s planned dinner with Trump therefore comes as the administration continues discussions with leading AI companies.
The Trump administration has emphasised maintaining US leadership in artificial intelligence, particularly amid competition with China. At the same time, technology leaders and researchers have raised concerns about the risks associated with increasingly capable AI systems and called for stronger safeguards. Asked by Fox News on Sunday about security incidents involving advanced AI models, Trump dismissed concerns about the technology, saying he was “not worried about it.”
Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are also scheduled to meet with leading AI executives on Tuesday. The meetings come as Washington weighs questions surrounding AI safety, military applications and technological competition. The upcoming dinner between Trump and Amodei could provide an opportunity for the two sides to discuss their differences directly, although no specific outcome from the meeting has been announced.
