Trump Heads to Beijing to Seal Trade Truce With Xi, but Iran War Clouds the Visit

Trump visits Beijing to finalise a trade deal as the Iran war overshadows the summit.

Donald Trump is preparing for a high-stakes meeting with Xi Jinping later this month, aiming to secure a truce in the ongoing trade dispute between the world’s two largest economies. The visit, scheduled from March 31 to April 2 in Beijing, will mark Trump’s first trip to China since returning to the White House for his second term. Analysts say the summit could play a crucial role in easing tensions that have strained global markets and disrupted international trade.

The planned meeting follows earlier discussions between the two leaders in South Korea last October, where they agreed in principle to pursue a trade truce. However, uncertainties remain about the scope and outcome of the upcoming summit, particularly as Washington has recently launched new trade investigations involving China and other countries. These investigations could potentially lead to fresh penalties and signal that economic tensions between the two nations remain unresolved.

Officials from the White House have insisted that preparations for the visit are progressing smoothly, with ongoing communication between Washington and Beijing. According to US officials, Trump intends to use the meeting to address a range of economic concerns, including improving market access and creating what he describes as a more level playing field for American farmers, manufacturers, and workers.

Despite the diplomatic preparations, business leaders have expressed concern that the visit could lack concrete outcomes if negotiations fail to produce substantive agreements. Sean Stein noted that business representatives had not yet received invitations to join the US delegation, raising questions about whether the summit will deliver meaningful economic commitments or simply symbolic gestures.

Ahead of the leaders’ summit, senior officials from both countries are expected to hold preparatory discussions. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to meet Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in Paris to explore potential economic agreements that could be announced during the Trump-Xi meeting. Analysts say these talks could help shape the framework for a broader trade settlement.

However, the diplomatic effort is unfolding against the backdrop of rising geopolitical tensions, including the ongoing US–Israel–Iran war. The conflict has disrupted energy markets and drawn global attention away from trade issues, potentially overshadowing the summit. Experts say the leaders may still seek to present the meeting as a moment of stability in an increasingly volatile international environment, even if major breakthroughs remain uncertain.
