Tripura Rolls Out Durable PVC Ration Cards

New PVC ration cards transform Tripura’s PDS

The Tripura Food and Civil Supplies Department has launched a significant upgrade to the state’s public distribution system (PDS) by distributing durable PVC ration cards to replace outdated paper versions, an official announced on Saturday. In the first phase, 4.87 lakh of the state’s 9.91 lakh family ration cards will be distributed, with the remaining cards to follow once beneficiaries complete their e-KYC verification.

Food and Civil Supplies Director Sumit Lodh told PTI, “The PVC ration cards are part of our modernization drive. These cards are weather-resistant, durable, and less prone to damage, ensuring long-term convenience, especially during monsoons.” The initiative aims to streamline access to subsidized essentials like rice, sugar, flour, kerosene, and tea leaves for PDS beneficiaries.

To enhance consumer experience, the department is transforming 600 of Tripura’s 2,072 fair price shops into model outlets. “Each ration dealer has received Rs 5,000 to upgrade their shops, improving service delivery and accessibility for cardholders,” Lodh added. These modernized outlets are designed to cater to the evolving needs of consumers, ensuring a more efficient distribution process.

The rollout follows concerns over the quality of PDS supplies, particularly after reports of substandard pulses surfaced. Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury addressed the issue, stating, “We are committed to maintaining high-quality standards. While bulk procurement may occasionally result in damaged consignments, we are actively addressing these lapses to ensure only the best products reach consumers.”

The initiative aligns with Tripura’s broader efforts to modernize its PDS framework, ensuring food security for over 37 lakh beneficiaries. The state government has also integrated digital tools, such as e-POS machines in fair price shops, to enhance transparency and curb leakages. Chief Minister Manik Saha emphasized that the PVC cards and upgraded shops reflect the government’s commitment to improving public welfare while adapting to technological advancements.
