Tripura Police Begin Digital Forensics On Devices After DGP Anurag Dhankar's Death

The Tripura Police will conduct a forensic examination of electronic devices belonging to Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar as part of the investigation into his death, an official said on Wednesday. The devices, including his mobile phone, laptop and personal computer, have been seized and will be analysed by forensic experts. Dhankar, a 1994-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, was found dead inside the washroom of his chamber at the state police headquarters in Agartala on Monday. Police have registered an unnatural death case and initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Investigating officer Subhrajit Deb told PTI that the seized electronic devices would be sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL) in Narsingarh, West Tripura, for detailed analysis. The examination is expected to assist investigators in gathering relevant information as part of the ongoing probe. "An unnatural death case has been registered and the investigation has already begun. As part of the probe, all electronic devices, including his mobile phone, laptop and personal computer, have been seized and will be sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory (SFSL) in Narsingarh, West Tripura, for analysis," Deb said.
Authorities have not disclosed further details about the investigation or any findings from the preliminary probe. Officials are examining available evidence and following established procedures as part of the inquiry. The death of a serving DGP has drawn attention from the police administration and state authorities. Investigators are expected to examine multiple aspects, including digital records and other available evidence, to understand the circumstances leading up to the incident.

Forensic analysis of electronic devices is a standard investigative procedure in cases where digital information may provide relevant details. Dhankar’s career in the Indian Police Service spanned more than three decades. A member of the 1994 IPS batch, he held senior positions during his service before being appointed as the Director General of Police of Tripura.
The Tripura Police have urged that the investigation be allowed to proceed without speculation while officials continue collecting evidence. Further details are expected after the forensic examination and other aspects of the inquiry are completed. The case remains under investigation, with authorities focusing on establishing the sequence of events and determining all relevant facts surrounding the death of the senior police officer.
