Trinity Metro Station Labourer Dies During Routine Pillar Excavation Work
Labourer fatally shocked during Bengaluru Metro pillar excavation work.
A labourer died after suffering an electric shock while carrying out work related to the Bengaluru Metro pillar lighting project near Trinity Metro Station in Bengaluru, Karnataka, on Friday. According to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL), the fatal incident took place at around 3:52 pm near Pillar No. 153 during earth pit excavation work being undertaken by contractor M/s M R Electricals. The worker reportedly came into contact with an electrical source while excavating, leading to the tragic accident.
BMRCL said the labourer was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital following the incident. Despite prompt medical attention, doctors declared him dead on arrival. The identity of the deceased has not yet been officially disclosed. Officials stated that emergency response procedures were initiated as soon as the accident was reported, while authorities began gathering details about the circumstances leading to the electrocution.
According to the metro corporation, the exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined. A detailed investigation has been ordered to establish how the worker came into contact with the electrical source and whether all required safety protocols were followed at the worksite. The findings of the inquiry are expected to determine if any lapses in safety measures or operational procedures contributed to the incident.

The fatal accident occurred during excavation work associated with the metro's pillar lighting project, highlighting the risks faced by workers engaged in infrastructure construction and maintenance. Such projects require strict adherence to electrical safety standards, including proper site inspections, isolation of live electrical lines and the use of protective equipment to minimise workplace hazards.
The incident comes during a week in which Bengaluru Metro has also experienced operational disruptions on its Purple Line. Earlier this week, a technical fault in a train at Cubbon Park Metro Station forced BMRCL to suspend through services temporarily, with trains operating only on two separate sections of the corridor. The disruption affected thousands of commuters before normal services were restored.
Another technical issue was reported on Thursday at the same station after a passenger's chain became stuck in a train door, preventing it from closing properly. As a safety precaution, passengers were asked to deboard the train, resulting in delays to several subsequent services before operations resumed. While those incidents were unrelated to Friday's fatal accident, the latest tragedy has once again drawn attention to safety standards during metro construction and maintenance activities in Bengaluru.
