Trapped in a 20-Foot Well, Elephant Duo Saved in Thrilling Jharkhand Rescue
Elephant and calf rescued from 20-ft well in Ramgarh.
In a remarkable operation, the Jharkhand Forest Department successfully rescued an adult elephant and its calf from a 20-foot-deep well in Hesapoda village, located within the Parsadih forest under Gola police station limits in Ramgarh district. The incident, which occurred as the elephants traversed a farmland, was reported by villagers on Thursday morning, September 25, 2025. The rescue, completed within two hours, ensured the safe return of both animals to their natural habitat, highlighting the department’s swift response and dedication to wildlife conservation.
Ramgarh Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Nitish Kumar detailed the operation, noting that the elephants likely fell into the well the previous day while moving with a herd of 42 elephants reported in the area over the past week. “Villagers informed us this morning, and our rescue team was dispatched immediately,” Kumar told PTI. The herd had been moving toward the Bokaro forest range, and officials suspect the mother and calf became separated during this migration. Following the rescue, both elephants were observed heading back toward the forest, with plans to facilitate their reunion with the herd by evening.
The well, located in an open area without protective barriers, was obscured by dense bushes, rendering it nearly invisible, according to local villagers. This lack of visibility likely contributed to the accident, underscoring the need for better safety measures around such structures in wildlife-prone areas. The incident highlights the challenges of human-wildlife coexistence in regions where elephant herds frequently traverse agricultural lands.
