Traffic Chaos Near Ashram Chowk: Pipeline Repair Work Triggers Diversions

Pipeline repairs cause heavy traffic near Ashram Chowk.

Severe traffic congestion gripped several parts of east and southeast Delhi on Tuesday following emergency repair work on a damaged Delhi Jal Board (DJB) pipeline near Ashram Chowk, leading to widespread diversions and long delays for commuters across key arterial routes. The disruption began after authorities initiated urgent repair work on a 1,200 mm diameter water pipeline that was reportedly damaged, prompting traffic restrictions on major stretches of the Ring Road.

According to officials, the affected corridor between Maharani Bagh and Ashram Chowk has been closed for repair work expected to continue for three to four days, significantly impacting daily movement across the area. The diversion plan has led to heavy congestion on multiple connecting routes, including the Ring Road stretch from Sarai Kale Khan towards Ashram Chowk, as well as traffic approaching from the DND Flyway.

Vehicles merging from CV Raman Marg onto the Ring Road have also faced bottlenecks, compounding delays for commuters heading towards Noida, Faridabad, and adjoining regions. Despite a traffic advisory issued by Delhi Traffic Police on Monday night, ground-level implementation on Tuesday appeared strained, with commuters reporting long queues, slow movement, and limited on-site traffic management. Many motorists described being stuck in hour-long snarls as alternative routes quickly became overloaded due to diverted traffic volumes.

Social media platforms saw a surge in complaints from daily commuters, who highlighted inadequate coordination and insufficient deployment of personnel at critical junctions. Several users noted that the lack of visible traffic regulation worsened the situation, particularly during peak morning and evening hours when vehicular density is highest.

Authorities have attributed the disruption to the urgent nature of the repair work, stressing that the damaged DJB pipeline requires immediate attention to ensure uninterrupted water supply and prevent further infrastructural issues. However, the scale of the diversions has exposed the challenges of managing high-volume urban traffic during emergency infrastructure maintenance in densely populated corridors.

With repairs expected to continue for several days, commuters travelling through key routes linking Delhi with Noida and Faridabad are likely to experience sustained delays. Traffic officials have advised motorists to avoid the affected stretches and use alternative routes wherever possible until normal movement is restored.
