Tourist Rush Chokes Himachal Roads As 15 Lakh Vehicles Enter Shimla In 45 Days

Massive tourist influx causes severe traffic congestion in Shimla.

Shimla and other major tourist destinations in Himachal Pradesh are facing severe traffic congestion as a massive influx of visitors continues to overwhelm the hill state’s road infrastructure. Between May 1 and June 15, around 15 lakh vehicles entered Shimla alone, highlighting the scale of the summer tourist rush that has coincided with peak vacation travel from the plains. The surge has led to frequent traffic jams across key routes, severely affecting mobility within the capital city.

Authorities have attributed the situation to the seasonal rise in tourist arrivals, especially as people travel to hill stations to escape intense summer heat. In Manali, another popular destination, more than 3,000 vehicles along with luxury buses are entering the town daily. The growing traffic load has placed significant pressure on narrow roads and ageing infrastructure, resulting in long delays and repeated bottlenecks across major tourist corridors.

To manage the situation, Himachal Pradesh Police have implemented a five-point traffic strategy, dividing Shimla into five sectors supervised by gazetted officers. The plan includes deploying an additional 210 personnel, home guards, and volunteers, along with increased bike patrol units for faster response to congestion-related incidents. Authorities have also stationed interceptor vehicles to enforce traffic rules and curb violations in high-density zones.

In a move aimed at reducing private vehicle usage, officials have permitted Travellers and other public transport vehicles to operate on Cart Road, a key arterial road in Shimla. The administration has also encouraged tourists heading towards Kufri, Narkanda, Theog, and Kinnaur to use the Shoghi-Mehli bypass, which currently diverts around 800 vehicles daily and helps ease pressure within the city limits.

Despite these measures, traffic disruptions persist, particularly when heavy vehicles break down on narrow roads, further worsening congestion. Police have stationed cranes across multiple sectors to clear such obstructions more quickly. Officials also cited unauthorised bus stoppages and idle parking as major contributors to delays. Meanwhile, tourism continues to remain strong across Himachal Pradesh, with hotel occupancy rates ranging between 60 and 90 per cent, reflecting robust seasonal demand even as traffic management challenges intensify.
