Torrential Rains Flood Kamareddy, Devastate Crops
Kamareddy floods destroy crops, disrupt lives
Heavy rainfall has wreaked havoc in Telangana’s Kamareddy district, submerging low-lying areas and agricultural fields since Wednesday. Rivulets and water bodies, swollen by relentless downpours, disrupted road connectivity in Kamareddy, Medak, Nizamabad, and Nirmal districts.
Argonda in Kamareddy recorded a staggering 418.3 mm of rainfall from 8:30 AM to 9 PM on Wednesday, while Akkapur in Nirmal saw 302.5 mm, according to the Telangana Development Planning Society.
The deluge caused significant crop losses, with farmers reporting damage to soybean, paddy, and other crops across thousands of acres. One person died in Kamareddy due to a wall collapse, and another remains missing. Over 500 residents were evacuated to safer locations, with food arrangements made for nearly 1,000 people.
The Indian Army, alongside NDRF and SDRF teams, has deployed specialized boats and equipment for relief operations in Medak, evacuating stranded families and distributing essentials. Engineering Task Forces are clearing debris to restore connectivity, while medical teams provide urgent care.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy is set to conduct an aerial survey of the affected districts today, following a teleconference led by Chief Secretary K Ramakrishna Rao, who emphasized proactive measures to mitigate the crisis. State Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy noted the resilience of the 103-year-old Pocharam project, which withstood a 1.82 lakh cusec inflow.
The South Central Railway cancelled four trains due to waterlogged tracks in the Gajwel-Lakdaram section. The IMD forecasts more heavy rainfall in Adilabad, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and other districts on Thursday, prompting heightened alert levels.
