Top TVK Leaders Questioned by CBI in Probe into Vijay Rally Stampede That Killed 41

TVK top brass faces intense questioning over 41-death tragedy.

Four top-ranking functionaries of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK)—General Secretary N Anand, General Secretary (Election Campaign Management) Adhav Arjuna, Karur District Secretary VP Mathiyazhagan, and Karur City functionary MC Pounraj—appeared before a special Central Bureau of Investigation team in Karur on Monday morning, marking a significant escalation in the probe into the catastrophic stampede that claimed 41 lives on September 27 during actor-politician Vijay’s maiden mega rally at Velusamypuram.

The investigation, transferred to the CBI on explicit directions of the Supreme Court, is meticulously examining alleged organisational negligence, flawed crowd management protocols, and possible violations of event permissions that transformed TVK’s high-profile political launch into one of Tamil Nadu’s deadliest public gatherings, leaving 41 dead and over 110 seriously injured.

The leaders arrived at the heavily guarded PWD circuit house within the District Collectorate campus at precisely 10:50 am, where CBI officers have established a temporary investigation hub. Hundreds of TVK cadres and local office-bearers immediately converged outside the premises, creating a charged atmosphere as television cameras captured the high-stakes questioning of Vijay’s closest political confidants.

Investigators have already recorded statements from more than 20 ambulance drivers and vehicle owners who were present at the venue, besides questioning Gurusaran, an office assistant at TVK’s Panaiyur headquarters in Chennai, and conducting door-to-door inquiries with several victims still recovering from injuries sustained in the chaos.

As the CBI widens its net to establish criminal liability for the tragedy, sources indicate that the agency is scrutinising internal communications, permission documents, stage and barricading arrangements, and the decision to proceed despite clear warnings of crowd overflow, with more TVK functionaries likely to be summoned in the coming days.
