TNCC Chief Manickam Tagore: Rahul Gandhi is PM Candidate, Vijay Should Stay CM
Tagore backs Vijay as CM, names Rahul Gandhi as PM candidate.
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president B. Manickam Tagore said Rahul Gandhi is the Congress party’s prime ministerial candidate while asserting that Chief Minister Vijay should continue in his role in Tamil Nadu. His remarks came amid political discussions over Vijay’s popularity and speculation about possible national ambitions for the actor-turned-politician. Tagore said the Congress was clear about its preference for the State’s leadership and wanted Vijay’s government to remain strong.
Responding to polls that reportedly projected Vijay as one of the popular choices for Prime Minister, Tagore rejected the suggestion that the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister should be considered for the top national post. He reiterated that Rahul Gandhi remains the party’s prime ministerial candidate. Tagore also said Vijay should continue as Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, arguing that his administration was providing corruption-free governance.
Tagore’s comments also addressed the relationship between the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the Congress. He alleged that some media organisations were attempting to create differences between the two parties. According to Tagore, such efforts were aimed at damaging the political relationship between TVK and Congress. He maintained that the two parties should not be divided by speculation or reports concerning leadership positions.

The remarks come amid growing political attention around Vijay, whose entry into electoral politics has significantly altered discussions about alliances and leadership in Tamil Nadu. His TVK has emerged as an important political force, with parties closely watching its position ahead of the State’s electoral contest. Vijay’s public standing has also generated discussion beyond Tamil Nadu, including speculation over whether his political influence could eventually extend to national politics.
Tagore, however, sought to draw a clear distinction between the State and national leadership questions. While supporting Vijay’s continuation as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, he identified Rahul Gandhi as the Congress’s choice for the Prime Ministerial position. His statement indicates that the Congress leadership in Tamil Nadu is seeking to maintain its political understanding with TVK while avoiding ambiguity over the party’s national leadership preference.
The TNCC president also stressed the importance of a strong government in Tamil Nadu and defended Vijay’s administration against criticism concerning governance. His comments are likely to add to the political debate surrounding the emerging relationship between TVK and Congress. As speculation over possible political alignments continues, Tagore’s statement places the State leadership question firmly with Vijay while maintaining Rahul Gandhi’s position as the Congress’s prime ministerial candidate.
