Tibetan Spiritual Leader Dalai Lama Returns To Dharamshala After Extended Ladakh Sojourn

Tibetan spiritual leader the 14th Dalai Lama, 91, returned to his residence in McLeodganj on Friday morning after spending more than two months in Ladakh, a stay that followed his knee replacement surgery earlier this year. His return marked the end of an extended absence from his home base in Dharamshala, one that had been closely watched by the Tibetan community and his followers across the region. The Dalai Lama had travelled to New Delhi in early June, where he underwent left knee replacement surgery on June 8 and remained in the capital during the initial phase of his recovery.

He subsequently travelled to Ladakh toward the end of June, where he stayed for an extended period, participating in a series of religious and public programmes during his time there. According to reports, he celebrated his 91st birthday while in Ladakh, participated in various prayer ceremonies, and attended the concluding session of the Yarchos Chenmo, or Great Summer Debate, held at Matho. Upon his arrival at Kangra Airport in Gaggal on Friday, the Dalai Lama was welcomed by senior officials of the Central Tibetan Administration (CTA), including Chief Justice Commissioner Yeshi Wangmo, Speaker Dolma Tsering Teykhang, and officiating Sikyong Tsegyal Chukya Dranyi, alongside members of the Tibetan community, devotees, and artists from the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA).

Artists performed the auspicious Tashi Sholpa dance at the airport as the spiritual leader emerged from the terminal, marking his return with a traditional ceremonial welcome. Large crowds of followers also gathered along the route from Gaggal to McLeodganj to catch a glimpse of the spiritual leader as his convoy passed. Many carried traditional Tibetan flags, offered prayers, and held flowers, incense, and white ceremonial scarves, reflecting the deep reverence in which the Dalai Lama is held by the Tibetan diaspora as well as many local residents in the Dharamshala region.

Dolma Tsering, Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, expressed the community's joy at the Dalai Lama's return, telling reporters that the pleasant weather added to what she described as a particularly joyous occasion, and noting that he appeared to be in good health following his extended stay in Ladakh. Tenzin Lobsang, General Secretary of the Tibetan Youth Congress, echoed similar sentiments, describing the widespread happiness among both Tibetans and local Indian residents at having the spiritual leader back in Dharamshala after nearly three months away.

McLeodganj has served as the Dalai Lama's exile home for more than six decades and functions as the headquarters of the Tibetan community in exile, as well as the primary center for his religious and public activities. With his return, his religious teachings, public audiences, and other engagements are expected to resume in the coming weeks, a development that is also likely to provide a boost to local tourism in the Dharamshala area, which draws significant numbers of visitors specifically hoping to see or hear from the spiritual leader during his residency in the hill town.
