Thunderstorm Alert: Rain to Soak Delhi Today
Delhi braces for thunderstorms, humid conditions persist.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by rain across Delhi on Friday, promising a wet and stormy end to the week. The capital is set to experience humid conditions, with the relative humidity recorded at a sticky 92% at 8:30 AM, according to the IMD’s morning bulletin. Residents are advised to prepare for potential disruptions as the weather system moves through the city.
The minimum temperature on Friday morning settled at 26.2°C, slightly below the normal by 0.3 degrees, while the maximum is expected to hover around 34°C. Recent rainfall data from the IMD shows varied precipitation across Delhi in the past 24 hours, with Aya Nagar recording the highest at 29.3 mm, followed by Safdarjung at 13.4 mm, Lodhi Road at 9.8 mm, Palam at 6.2 mm, and Ridge at a modest 1.8 mm. These showers have kept the city’s atmosphere damp, contributing to the high humidity levels.
Delhi’s air quality remains in the ‘moderate’ category, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 110 recorded at 9 AM, as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). The CPCB classifies an AQI of 101-200 as ‘moderate,’ indicating acceptable air quality but with potential concerns for sensitive groups. This comes as a relief compared to the city’s frequent battles with ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’ AQI levels during winter months.

The IMD’s forecast suggests that the thunderstorms may bring temporary respite from the heat but could lead to waterlogging and traffic issues in low-lying areas. Delhiites are urged to stay updated on weather alerts and take precautions while commuting. As the monsoon season winds down, such weather events highlight the city’s ongoing challenges with urban infrastructure and drainage systems.
