Three-Storey Balcony Collapse Kills Retired Teacher In Gurugram

A 60-year-old retired teacher from Delhi died after suffering serious injuries in a cascading balcony collapse at his house in Sushant Lok 3, Gurugram. The incident occurred when the second-floor balcony of the property gave way while the homeowner and a contractor were inspecting it. The collapse triggered a domino effect, bringing down balconies on the first and ground floors. The victim, identified as Kanhaiya Singh Yadav, was rescued from the debris but later succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

According to Gurugram police, Yadav was at the property with Pawan, a contractor, when the second-floor balcony collapsed. Both men became trapped in concrete following the initial collapse and were subsequently rescued with the help of local residents. Pawan also sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment. Police said the condition of the contractor was being monitored while the circumstances surrounding the structural failure were being examined.

Sandeep Turan, public relations officer of Gurugram police, said Yadav, who lived in Dwarka Sector 3 in Delhi, had suffered serious injuries in the incident and did not survive. His body was handed over to family members after a postmortem examination, police said. Inquest proceedings were also carried out under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), as part of the procedure following the death.

Residents said Yadav and the contractor had been inspecting the second-floor balcony because the owner was considering repairs to the property. Yadav was reportedly planning to shift into the Sushant Lok 3 house. During the inspection, the balcony allegedly collapsed suddenly, causing the structures beneath it to fail one after another. The incident left both men trapped amid concrete and debris before neighbours managed to rescue them and arrange medical assistance.

The incident has also raised concerns among residents about the condition of older buildings in the area. Pawan Yadav, president of the resident welfare association of Sushant Lok 2 and 3, said there were several old structures in Sushant Lok 3 that were in poor condition. He called for authorities to identify buildings that could pose structural risks and take appropriate remedial measures. The collapse has renewed attention on the need for residents and authorities to assess ageing structures, particularly when repair or renovation work is being considered.

The exact cause of the balcony collapse has not been established in the information available from police and residents. The incident is being treated as a structural accident, while the circumstances leading to the failure remain subject to examination. The death of Yadav has added urgency to concerns over the safety of ageing residential structures in the locality, with residents calling for greater attention to buildings that may require repairs or structural assessment before they become hazardous.
