Three People Swept Away in Dhemaji Floods, One Missing in Assam

Three swept away in Assam floods; one missing.

A tragic incident has been reported from Assam’s flood-hit Dhemaji district, where three people were swept away by strong currents of the Simen River on Monday in the Jonai subdivision. The mishap occurred amid severe flooding triggered by continuous heavy rainfall across the region, which has caused multiple rivers to overflow and inundate large parts of the district. Local authorities and residents immediately launched rescue operations following the incident.

According to local sources, the victims were caught in the fast-rising waters of the Simen River as water levels surged unexpectedly. The sudden flow, intensified by persistent rainfall in both Assam and upstream areas of Arunachal Pradesh, left little time for escape. Rescue teams along with villagers managed to reach the affected area quickly and began search efforts in difficult river conditions. The situation remained challenging due to strong currents and widespread flooding in surrounding areas.

Officials later confirmed that two of the three individuals were rescued after being carried downstream toward the Brahmaputra River. However, one person remains missing and search operations are ongoing. The missing individual has been identified as Sudamay Yadav, a resident of Balikhuti village. Authorities have deployed additional teams to trace him, while local volunteers continue to assist in the search despite hazardous conditions.

The flood situation in Dhemaji district has worsened over the past several days, with rivers such as the Simen, Chimen, Kemi, Depi, and Dikhari flowing above danger levels. Several villages have been submerged, with homes, farmlands, and basic infrastructure suffering extensive damage. In some areas, embankments have been breached and roads washed away, further isolating communities already struggling with rising waters.

Rail and road connectivity in parts of the district has also been severely disrupted after floodwaters damaged a railway bridge near Simen Chapari, forcing the suspension of train services to Jonai. Thousands of residents have been affected, with many displaced from their homes and seeking shelter in safer locations. Authorities have urged people living near riverbanks and low-lying areas to remain cautious and avoid venturing into swollen rivers as water levels continue to fluctuate.

Rescue and relief operations are ongoing across the flood-affected regions of Dhemaji, with officials closely monitoring the evolving situation. Emergency teams have been deployed to assist stranded residents and provide relief materials, while district administrations continue to issue warnings as heavy rainfall persists in the region, raising concerns of further flooding in the coming days.
