Three Family Members Die in Delhi Jahangirpuri Hit-and-Run Tragedy
Motorcycle struck by speeding vehicles near Mukundpur flyover; police launch probe to trace culprits.
Three members of a family lost their lives in a hit-and-run incident near the Mukundpur flyover on the Outer Ring Road in northwest Delhi’s Jahangirpuri area early Monday, police reported. The victims, who were riding a motorcycle, were struck by an unidentified vehicle, highlighting persistent road safety concerns in one of the capital’s busiest corridors. Authorities have launched a probe, but the absence of immediate witnesses and nearby surveillance has complicated efforts to identify the perpetrators.
The accident occurred around midnight, prompting a PCR call to Jahangirpuri police station at 12:05 a.m. By the time officers arrived, the three victims had already succumbed to their injuries at the scene. Identified as 60-year-old Shahid, his 28-year-old son Faiz, and 12-year-old grandson Hamza—Shahid’s daughter’s son—all residents of north Ghonda in Delhi, the family was returning from a visit to Uttam Nagar. Preliminary investigations suggest a car hit their motorcycle from behind, causing them to fall, after which another vehicle ran over them. No eyewitnesses were present, and the immediate area lacks CCTV coverage, though police are reviewing footage from cameras along the route to trace the vehicles involved.
A case has been registered at Jahangirpuri police station under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including those pertaining to rash and negligent driving causing death. The Outer Ring Road, a vital artery connecting Delhi’s suburbs, has seen multiple fatal accidents in recent years due to high traffic volumes, speeding, and poor enforcement of speed limits, especially at night. Experts attribute such incidents to inadequate infrastructure upgrades and the challenges of monitoring expansive highways in urban fringes.

In a heartfelt account to PTI, Shahid’s brother recounted the devastating circumstances: the family had traveled together to Uttam Nagar, but Shahid opted to ride back with Faiz and Hamza on the motorcycle while others took a cab. “A car coming at high speed hit them, and they fell off the bike. Another car drove over them in that crowded space,” he said, voice breaking. “The biggest tragedy is that now the family is orphaned.” As relatives grapple with profound grief, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of reckless driving, with authorities vowing swift action to bring the culprits to justice.
