Thousands Detained Across India As Unions Strike With INDIA Bloc Support
The INDIA bloc supports unions in a nationwide strike, resulting in thousands of detentions and widespread disruptions.
Thousands of workers were detained across multiple states on Thursday as unions staged a nationwide strike against the central government, officials said. The industrial action, supported by the INDIA bloc of opposition parties, called for greater worker protections, better wages, and opposition to recent labour law reforms.
The strike, which began early in the morning, disrupted public transport, rail services, and essential services in several major cities. Police and paramilitary forces were deployed in key areas to maintain order, with reports indicating that thousands of protestors were taken into custody during demonstrations that at times turned confrontational.
Union leaders said the strike was a response to policies they claim undermine workers’ rights and threaten job security. They accused the central government of failing to engage in meaningful dialogue and alleged that their attempts at negotiation were largely ignored. Officials, however, maintained that law enforcement actions were necessary to prevent escalation and ensure public safety.

The INDIA bloc, a coalition of opposition parties, openly expressed solidarity with the striking workers and condemned the detentions, calling on the government to respect the right to peaceful protest. Party representatives argued that the strike highlights growing discontent over labour reforms and urged a parliamentary review of recent legislation.
The government defended its labour policies, stating that reforms were aimed at increasing employment opportunities, modernizing industry regulations, and promoting ease of doing business. Authorities also reiterated their commitment to lawful protest while warning against disruptions that affect public services and essential infrastructure.
Analysts said the strike underscores deepening tensions between the central government and organised labour, and could influence ongoing political debates ahead of upcoming state and national elections. Observers noted that negotiations between unions and officials are expected in the coming days to defuse tensions and address core grievances.
