Those Who Attacked Police Will Be Dug Out From Graves; Fadnavis' Chilling Vow

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis reiterated his Government's zero tolerance policy for the premeditated attack on Nagpur Police in the unfortunate violence that occured on Monday.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis issued a chilling warning on Wednesday to those behind the Nagpur violence, promising that attackers of police would be “dug out from their graves” and brought to justice.

Speaking in the state Assembly during a budget debate on the Home Department, Fadnavis condemned the Monday night riots that saw mobs injure 33 police personnel, including three deputy commissioners, with stones and petrol bombs. The unrest, he said, was a calculated bid to fracture social harmony in a city long known for peace.

“Attacks on police are unforgivable,” Fadnavis declared, his voice firm. “We will track down those responsible, no matter where they hide, and ensure they face the harshest punishment.” The statement came amid outrage over reports of rioters allegedly assaulting a woman constable—attempting to disrobe her and making obscene remarks—detailed in an FIR filed at Ganeshpeth police station.

The mob’s rampage in central Nagpur left vehicles torched, homes damaged, and the city reeling.

Fadnavis, a Nagpur native, insisted the violence was premeditated, pointing to a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) protest over Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar as the spark. “Only a replica of the grave was burnt—no Quranic verses were harmed,” he clarified, debunking rumors that fueled the chaos. “Some spread deliberate lies to incite unrest, but Nagpur has seen no riots since 1992. We won’t let this stand.”

He aligned his stance with the Nagpur police commissioner, noting that ongoing investigations would confirm the planning behind the clashes.

With several arrests already made, Fadnavis assured the Assembly that calm has returned to Nagpur, a city he praised for its communal harmony. Yet his fierce rhetoric—vowing to unearth culprits even from the grave—signals a zero-tolerance crackdown.
