Thiruvananthapuram’s Seed Ball Triumph Earns World Record Glory

Thiruvananthapuram Corporation’s innovative Seed Ball Project secured a prestigious spot in the London-based World Book of Records, a testament to the city’s commitment to environmental sustainability. Mayor Arya S Rajendran proudly announced that the initiative, alongside herself and the 6,000+ participating students, has been recognized for its remarkable contribution to reforestation and biodiversity. Each student will receive a personalized certificate, celebrating their role in this eco-revolution.

The record-setting event, held on August 9, 2025, at Putharikandam Maidan, saw over 7,000 students—surpassing the planned 6,000—craft and disperse 400,000 seed balls in just three hours. These seed balls, made from soil, compost, and native seeds, are designed to sprout into trees across barren lands, boosting urban greenery under the Green Trivandrum initiative.

The campaign, inaugurated by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, aligns with the city’s pioneering Green Budget 2025, making Thiruvananthapuram the first in Kerala to adopt such an eco-focused financial plan.

Mayor Rajendran, who received the provisional certificate from World Book of Records representative Rinish T P, shared her pride on social media, noting the city’s prior UN Habitat Global Award for sustainable development in 2024. “These accolades belong to the people of Kerala,” she stated, emphasizing community-driven environmental action.

The event also featured performances and speeches, with officials like Deputy Mayor P K Raju and Corporation Secretary Jahamgeer S in attendance, reinforcing the city’s green vision.
