Thane House Collapse Claims Sleeping 12-Year-Old's Life, Injures Two Family Members

Neighbouring house collapse kills sleeping boy, injures two relatives.

A 12-year-old boy lost his life and two of his family members were injured after a portion of an old residential building collapsed onto a neighbouring house in Maharashtra's Thane district on Friday. The incident occurred at Madras Chawl in Azad Nagar, Brahmand, where the victims were asleep when debris from the adjoining structure crashed into their home, prompting an emergency rescue operation.

According to officials, the accident took place at around 3:35 pm when a section of the gallery of a ground-plus-one-storey building gave way. Preliminary findings indicate that the damaged structure, estimated to be between 25 and 30 years old, partially collapsed onto the adjacent house. The impact trapped members of the family inside, triggering panic among local residents and prompting authorities to rush to the scene.

The deceased has been identified as 12-year-old Jaykumar Jaiswal, who sustained critical injuries after the collapse. Rescue teams pulled him from the debris and rushed him to the Civil Hospital for treatment. However, doctors declared him dead before medical intervention could begin. Two other members of his family also suffered injuries in the incident and were taken for treatment. Their condition has not been officially disclosed.

Emergency personnel, including local police and civic authorities, carried out rescue and relief operations to ensure no one else remained trapped under the rubble. Officials secured the area and began assessing the structural stability of nearby buildings to prevent any further accidents. Residents of the locality gathered at the site as rescue efforts continued, while authorities urged people to stay away from the damaged structure.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the collapse was caused by the failure of a section of the building's gallery, though the exact reason behind the structural failure is yet to be determined. Authorities are expected to conduct a detailed inspection to establish whether poor maintenance, ageing infrastructure or other factors contributed to the incident. Civic officials are also likely to examine whether the building had been declared unsafe or required repairs before the collapse.

Building collapses remain a recurring concern in parts of Maharashtra, particularly during the monsoon season, when ageing structures become increasingly vulnerable due to prolonged rainfall and weakened foundations. Civic bodies routinely conduct structural audits of old buildings and issue notices to occupants of unsafe properties, but incidents continue to highlight the risks posed by deteriorating infrastructure. Authorities are expected to continue their investigation into the Thane collapse while monitoring nearby buildings to ensure the safety of residents.
