Thane Doctor Assaulted By Patient’s Son Following Heated Argument At Hospital
Patient’s son allegedly attacked doctor following a heated confrontation.
An orthopaedic doctor was allegedly verbally abused and assaulted by the son of a patient at a private hospital in Kalyan, Thane district, on Saturday night. Dr Yogendra Jaiswal said the incident occurred at around 11 pm while he was examining a patient being treated for a rib fracture. A police case has been registered in connection with the incident, although no arrest had been made at the time of the report.
According to Dr Jaiswal, he was explaining the treatment procedure to patient Jaywant Deshmukh, including how the bandage was to be applied and how the prescribed medication should be taken. The patient’s son repeatedly asked questions and allegedly addressed the doctor in an informal and disrespectful manner. Dr Jaiswal said he objected to the way he was being spoken to during the consultation.
The doctor said the patient’s son responded angrily when questioned about his manner of addressing him. According to Jaiswal, the man allegedly asked, “Who do you think you are — some big-shot doctor?” before leaving the examination area and allegedly hurling abuses at him. Jaiswal said that when he objected to the behaviour, the man returned and allegedly assaulted him. The doctor has demanded immediate and strict action in the case.

The incident has raised fresh concerns among doctors in Maharashtra over the safety of medical professionals at hospitals and clinics. The attack comes weeks after another reported assault involving a doctor in the Kalyan-Dombivli area. Doctors have called for stronger security measures, arguing that medical staff should be able to treat patients without facing intimidation or violence.
In early July, Shiv Sena corporator Ramesh Mhatre from Kalyan-Dombivli was reportedly caught on camera assaulting a woman doctor. He and his supporters were also seen allegedly attacking other hospital staff and nurses. Mhatre denied attacking the doctor and declined to apologise, according to the report. The latest incident has added to concerns within the medical community about repeated attacks on healthcare workers.
“We doctors spend years studying and working hard to save patients’ lives, yet instead of appreciation, we are getting beaten up. This is absolutely wrong,” Dr Jaiswal said. He described himself as still being in shock following the alleged assault and appealed for strict action against the accused. The case is now with the police, while doctors continue to seek greater protection for healthcare workers in hospitals.
