Thane Cops Suspended for Losing Prisoners

Nine officers disciplined for negligence during escort duty.

Nine policemen in Maharashtra’s Thane city have been suspended for negligence and dereliction of duty while escorting seven undertrial prisoners to Kalwa civic hospital on August 4, a senior official announced Friday. The suspensions, ordered by Deputy Commissioner of Police (HQ-2) Pawan Bansode, followed a probe revealing multiple irregularities that raised suspicions of misconduct.

The incident occurred when the police team failed to properly supervise the prisoners during a medical examination. Only five of the seven prisoners were accounted for at the hospital, with one left uncuffed and a team member distracted on his mobile phone. The team initially misled superiors about the whereabouts of the missing prisoners, Karan Dabhalia and Rajesh Pambar, claiming they were at the X-ray section or washroom. A search found no trace of them until they were located at 3:50 pm.

The probe highlighted the team’s failure to maintain control, prompting swift action. The suspended officers—Gangaram Ghule, Girish Patil, Vilas Mohite, Kishore Shirke, Ashok Munde, Sandeep Kharat, Sunil Nikalje, Bharat Jaybhay, and Vikram Jambure—face further investigation for their lapses. The incident has sparked concerns about prisoner escort protocols, with authorities emphasizing stricter oversight to prevent future breaches.
