Temperature in Kolkata Falls Sharply by 6°C Amid Heavy Overnight Rain

Kolkata temperature drops 6°C after overnight rain; Met warns of heavy showers and strong winds.

Kolkata experienced a sudden drop in temperature on Saturday following overnight rain, with the minimum temperature falling by six degrees Celsius, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Alipore reported. The Met department has forecast scattered to moderate rainfall across Kolkata and South Bengal for the coming days.

The rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds of 50 to 60 kilometres per hour, began on Friday evening and intensified through the night. Torrential downpours, lightning, and strong winds were reported across several parts of the city, bringing the minimum temperature down from 25 degrees Celsius on Friday morning to 19.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday—4.4 degrees below the seasonal average.

The Met department warned that after two days of falling temperatures, the mercury is expected to rise by three to five degrees. However, adverse weather conditions were reported across South Bengal as well. In Malda district, the roof of a wholesale market shed at Netaji Municipal Market in English Bazar collapsed during the storm, leaving two people injured.

North Bengal remains under a heavy rainfall alert, with Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar districts expected to receive intense showers. The region is forecast to experience storms and rainfall until next Wednesday or Thursday. In the southern districts of Howrah, Hooghly, Bankura, Murshidabad, Nadia, and East Burdwan, winds could gust up to 60 to 70 kilometres per hour.

Authorities have issued a prohibition on fishermen venturing into the Bay of Bengal until Sunday due to turbulent waters near Odisha. The Met Office cited a cyclonic circulation over northwest Madhya Pradesh and adjoining southern Uttar Pradesh, along with a surface trough extending to Nagaland, Jharkhand, Gangetic West Bengal, and South Assam, as driving strong moisture inflows from the Bay of Bengal, maintaining favorable conditions for rainfall across the state.

Weather conditions are expected to improve gradually from Sunday evening, with warnings limited to the southern districts of South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, and Jhargram. Residents are advised to exercise caution as the storm subsides and the region prepares for a temporary rise in temperature.
