Telangana Woman Returns Home After 25 Days Of Alleged Confinement In Oman

A 45-year-old woman from Warangal, Telangana, who allegedly spent nearly 25 days confined in Muscat after travelling to Oman on the promise of domestic work, has returned safely to India following intervention by BRS working president KT Rama Rao, according to a press release issued by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi. The woman, Mohammed Mahamuda, reportedly travelled to Muscat on July 16 after an agent offered her employment. Instead, she allegedly found herself in a situation where her freedom of movement was restricted and she was unable to contact her family for assistance.

According to the BRS statement, Mahamuda travelled to Oman on a tourist visa after being assured that she would receive domestic work. After reaching Muscat, she was allegedly handed over to a sub-agent who took possession of her mobile phone and passport. She alleged that she was then confined to a room and forced to work against her wishes. Mahamuda also alleged that she faced harassment and physical assault during the period of her confinement. With her travel documents and phone reportedly taken away, she was unable to independently seek help or make arrangements to return home.

Mahamuda further alleged that she was threatened when she expressed a desire to return to India. According to her account, the sub-agent threatened to implicate her in a theft case and have her sent to jail. She was allegedly told that she would be permitted to leave only after paying ₹1.13 lakh, which the sub-agent claimed had been spent on bringing her to Muscat. With no access to her passport or mobile phone and limited ability to communicate with people outside the premises, Mahamuda reportedly remained trapped for almost 25 days. The allegations describe a situation in which she feared for her safety while being separated from her family in India.

The woman's situation eventually came to the attention of RTV anchor Manoj, who reportedly informed journalist and Balagam TV CEO Balu Kaithi about her circumstances. Balu subsequently brought the matter to the attention of KTR, seeking intervention to help rescue Mahamuda and arrange her return to India. According to the BRS press release, KTR responded promptly after being informed about the case and assured that he would personally bear the expenses required to bring her back safely. The intervention provided a route for the woman's case to receive urgent attention after she had allegedly been unable to secure her release independently.

The BRS statement said efforts were subsequently made to facilitate Mahamuda's return from Oman. After spending around 25 days in the difficult circumstances she described, she was able to leave Muscat and return to India. The case has drawn attention to the risks faced by workers who travel overseas after being promised employment through agents or intermediaries. The circumstances described by Mahamuda also highlight the vulnerability of workers who travel on tourist visas for jobs and may find themselves without proper employment documentation or access to their passports once they reach another country.

Mahamuda's return brings an end to the period of confinement she says she endured in Muscat, allowing her to reunite with her family in Telangana.
