Telangana Government Requests Rs 5,000 Crore Central Assistance For Development Projects

Telangana requests Rs 5,000 crore central assistance under SASCI for capital investment projects.

The Telangana government has sought additional financial assistance of ₹5,000 crore from the Centre under the Scheme for Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI), according to an official statement released on Wednesday. The request was made by Deputy Chief Minister and Finance Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka during a meeting with Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in New Delhi. The discussions reportedly focused on the state’s development priorities, capital expenditure requirements, and ongoing welfare programmes across key sectors.

During the meeting, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka highlighted Telangana’s large-scale investments in education, healthcare, rural infrastructure, and human resource development. He sought the additional ₹5,000 crore under SASCI to support the state’s capital investment plans and strengthen infrastructure creation initiatives.

The Deputy Chief Minister also raised concerns regarding fiscal constraints and requested exemptions under the Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) framework for externally aided projects approved by the Department of Economic Affairs. He emphasised that such relaxations would help the state implement long-term developmental schemes more effectively.

One of the key projects discussed was the Young India Integrated Residential Schools (YIIRS) programme, a ₹30,000 crore initiative aimed at improving access to quality education and nutrition for students. Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka had earlier sought special financial support and FRBM exemption for the project, describing it as a major investment in human capital development.

The Telangana delegation, which has also included senior ministers in previous representations, argued that the programme is designed to benefit students from socially and economically disadvantaged communities. Officials stated that a significant proportion of the state’s population belongs to Backward Classes, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, underscoring the need for targeted educational infrastructure.

As discussions between the state and the Centre continue, the Telangana government is expected to pursue further approvals for its capital investment and welfare programmes, with a focus on expanding infrastructure and improving long-term social development outcomes.
