Telangana CM Pushes for BC Quota Bill Approval
Revanth Reddy urges Centre for BC quota assent
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy reiterated his demand for the central government to approve two bills passed by the state legislature to provide a 42% reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies, education, and employment.
Speaking after hoisting the National Flag at Hyderabad’s historic Golconda Fort during Independence Day celebrations, Reddy emphasized the urgency of securing Presidential assent for the bills, which have been pending for over five months since their passage in March 2025. “I once again demand the central government to take a quick decision on these bills,” he declared, underscoring their significance for social justice.
Reddy highlighted the state’s pioneering caste census, completed between February 4, 2024, and February 4, 2025, as a foundation for the bills, which aim to increase BC reservations from 23% to 42%. The census revealed that BCs, including 10% BC Muslims, constitute 56.33% of Telangana’s population. An ordinance to amend the Telangana Panchayat Raj Act 2018, removing the 50% reservation cap to accommodate the enhanced quota, also awaits approval.
The Chief Minister accused the BJP-led central government of stalling, alleging pressure on President Droupadi Murmu to delay granting an audience to Telangana leaders. This follows a three-day protest led by Reddy at Jantar Mantar in Delhi, supported by Congress and INDIA bloc allies, including DMK and NCP MPs. Reddy framed the issue as a fight for OBC rights, dismissing BJP claims that the bills include Muslim quotas as “cheap tactics” to mislead the public.

Reddy also outlined his ambitious ‘TelanganaRising 2047’ vision, aiming to transform Telangana into a USD 1 trillion economy by 2035 and USD 3 trillion by 2047, aligning state progress with national growth. He described the caste census and SC classification as historic steps toward equitable representation, positioning Telangana’s model as a benchmark for the nation.
