Teacher Arrested in Assam Madrassa Sexual Abuse Case Involving Minor Girls

Key accused arrested in Assam madrassa sexual abuse case involving minors.

The key accused in the alleged sexual abuse of minor girls at a privately run madrassa in Assam's Bongaigaon district has been arrested, police said on Friday. The accused, identified as Aminul Islam, had been absconding for the past two days following the registration of a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. His arrest marks a significant development in the investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving students at the institution.

According to Bongaigaon police, the investigation has now expanded beyond the alleged abuse, with officials examining the madrassa's financial records and possible links to organisations already under the scrutiny of law enforcement agencies. Police said they have seized certain literature from the premises, which is being analysed by experts to determine whether it was used for any form of radicalisation. Authorities, however, stressed that the primary focus of the investigation remains the POCSO case.

Bongaigaon's Senior Superintendent of Police, Numal Mahatta, said the financial trail of the institution was being thoroughly investigated. He stated that while investigators could not rule out additional angles, any further action would depend on the evidence collected during the probe. If necessary, police may register a separate case to investigate issues unrelated to the allegations of sexual abuse.

The case has already led to action against the madrassa's management. Earlier, the managing trustee of the institution was arrested, while two other trustees were detained for questioning. The district administration also sealed the private girls' madrassa on Wednesday after allegations surfaced that minor students residing there had been sexually abused. Police said around 149 girls were staying at the institution at the time of the action.

Officials said a case under the POCSO Act was registered immediately after authorities received the complaint. The legislation provides stringent legal protection for children against sexual offences and mandates a prompt investigation into allegations involving minors. Investigators are continuing to record statements, gather evidence and examine all aspects of the case to determine the full extent of the alleged offences.

The allegations triggered widespread outrage in Malegarh village, where angry residents later entered the madrassa campus and damaged property before police intervened to restore order. Security has since been tightened around the premises as the investigation continues. Authorities have appealed for calm, assuring the public that the case will be investigated thoroughly and that appropriate legal action will be taken against anyone found responsible based on the evidence.
