Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam Wins Both Bypolls In Tamil Nadu

TVK's twin victories provide a boost to the Tamil Nadu government.

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), the ruling party in Tamil Nadu led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, has won both Assembly bypolls in Madurantakam and Dharapuram, defeating its principal rival, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), in both constituencies. TVK candidates Maragatham Kumaravel and Sathyabama secured victories by margins of 17,554 and 10,196 votes, respectively. The results provide a political boost to the Vijay-led government and offer the party an opportunity to project the victories as an endorsement of its performance during its first four months in office.

In Madurantakam, Maragatham Kumaravel polled 61,470 votes, defeating DMK candidate Paranthaman, who received 43,916 votes. All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidate Ganitha Sampath finished third with 38,770 votes. Naam Tamilar Katchi nominee Janakiraman secured 1,703 votes, while Communist Party of India (Marxist) candidate Sugandhi received 1,441 votes. A total of 27 candidates contested the seat, with counting completed in 21 rounds.

Madurantakam recorded a voter turnout of 86.26 per cent, with 1,84,413 of the constituency's 2,13,788 registered voters casting their ballots. The participation rate reflected substantial electoral engagement in the constituency. Kumaravel's victory margin of more than 17,000 votes gave TVK a clear advantage over the DMK, while the AIADMK finished in third place. The result strengthened the ruling party's position in the constituency following a closely contested campaign involving multiple political parties.

In Dharapuram, TVK candidate Sathyabama won with 62,596 votes, defeating DMK nominee Sukanya, who polled 52,400 votes. AIADMK candidate Bhanumathi finished third with 41,078 votes, while Naam Tamilar Katchi nominee Karthika received 4,954 votes. Communist Party of India candidate Lakshmanan secured 1,099 votes. The constituency recorded a turnout of 80.30 per cent, with 1,79,314 of its 2,23,306 registered voters participating in the election. Counting was completed over 23 rounds, with 22 candidates contesting the seat.

The bypolls became necessary after the legislators elected on AIADMK tickets resigned from the Assembly and joined TVK, leaving both constituencies vacant. The resulting contests brought the ruling party face-to-face with the DMK, AIADMK, Left parties and Naam Tamilar Katchi. The twin victories now give TVK fresh political momentum, while the opposition parties face the task of reviewing their campaign strategies and electoral support in the two constituencies.

TVK workers celebrated the victories as the results were confirmed, while ministers in the state government described the outcome as an endorsement of the administration's performance. For Chief Minister Vijay, the wins offer an opportunity to strengthen the party's political standing and demonstrate its ability to compete against established Dravidian parties. However, the results are limited to two constituencies, and their broader implications for Tamil Nadu's political landscape will depend on the government's performance and voter sentiment in future elections.
