Tamil Nadu Police Bolster Security After Elderly Couple’s Brutal Murder in Erode
In response to the horrific murder of an elderly couple in a remote farmhouse near Sivagiri, Erode district, the Tamil Nadu Police have ramped up security measures across the western districts of Erode, Tiruppur, and Coimbatore.
The savage crime, which claimed the lives of R. Ramasamy (75) and Bhagyalakshmi (65), has sparked widespread concern, marking the third such incident in the region over the past two years.
The couple was found dead on May 1, their bodies decomposing, indicating the murder likely occurred days earlier. Discovered with multiple injuries, the victims’ isolated home in a coconut grove lacked surveillance and nearby neighbors, making it an easy target.

Police suspect the attackers meticulously planned the crime, stealing approximately 10 sovereigns of gold jewelry and possibly using a nearby irrigation canal to access and escape the scene undetected.
The victims’ son, Kavi Sankar, raised the alarm when he couldn’t contact his father. A relative sent to check on the couple found them brutally beaten to death.
In response, police have intensified canal-based patrolling, doubling patrol units from 39 to 82 along key irrigation channels, including the Parambikulam Aliyar Project, Lower Bhavani Project, and Noyyal River. Tiruppur’s units rose from 23 to 35, Erode’s from 11 to 22, and Coimbatore’s from 5 to 15, with routes mapped in collaboration with the Water Resources Department.
Each patrol team, consisting of two officers—one armed—is actively securing vulnerable areas. Police are also conducting door-to-door visits to farmhouses, urging residents to install CCTV cameras and join WhatsApp groups for rapid alerts.
The ‘Kaval Udhavi’ app is being promoted for emergency reporting. With 300 additional officers deployed, authorities are determined to prevent further tragedies and apprehend the culprits behind this heinous act.
